Ten Reasons You KNOW You’re a Blackberry Addict

Several people have put their take on this, but here’s mine for what it’s worth:

1. When upon immediately waking up in the morning, the first thing on your mind is your Blackberry. (you wonder how it is, if it slept well, etc.)

2. When taking a shower is stressful, because you can’t take your Blackberry with you. (well, you can but it wouldn’t be a good idea)

3. When you scowl at those signs in doctor’s offices that say, ‘All Cell Phones MUST be Turned Off’ (yes, we can still do email and browse the web - but we hate those signs anyway)

4. When, if we have young kids, we say to them: ‘Don’t touch my Blackberry, don’t look at my Blackberry…heck, don’t even THINK about my Blackberry’ for the simple reason we don’t want anything (not even potential bad thoughts) to happen to our baby, ie Blackberry.

5. When you get anxious seeing that little red light blinking indicating there’s a new message and can’t immediately check it because - darn it! - somebody or something needs your undivided attention at that exact moment. The nerve!

6. When your significant other says something bad about your Blackberry and it actually hurts your feelings.

7. When we leave that significant other over their dislike of our Blackberry. (hey, if they can’t accept my Blackberry, they can’t accept ME!)

8. When you take your tax money and buy the newest Blackberry with it instead of putting it towards your kid’s much needed braces.

9. When you have nightmares of something bad happening to your Blackberry.

10. When you can’t ever imagine the rest of your life without a Blackberry in it.

3G BlackBerry Phone delayed, say Rumors

After the 3G iPhone, now the 3G BlackBerry phone is hit by a rumor. Fortune.com has reported that the release of the 3G BlackBerry handset has been delayed.

Reportedly, the 3G BlackBerry phone, which was originally expected to launch in June 2008, is facing a technical glitch, due to which its release is being delayed.

The upcoming 3G BlackBerry phone is called BlackBerry 8900 or Meteor. Revealing more details about the 3G phone Fortune says, “It is a black phone with a silver metal edge, curved corners and a flatter Qwerty keyboard than the namesake bumpy berry-skin keypad.”

Also Fortune mentioned that RIM is expected to release the iPhone rival, BlackBerry 9000 by the end of this year.

RIM BlackBerry Bold Smartphone unveiled

RIM has released its new smartphone named BlackBerry Bold (model number: 9000). This is the first BlackBerry model to support tri-band HSDPA high-speed networks around the world. Integrated GPS, Wi-Fi and other multimedia capabilities are the key features of the latest model.
The Bold is wrapped in a glossy black body having a satin chrome finished frame and stylish leather-like backplate. Like all other BlackBerry handsets, the Bold also features a QWERTY keyboard.

The latest smartphone is equipped with the next-generation 624 MHz mobile processor making downloading, video streaming and web surfing faster. Moreover, the Bold features 128MB Flash memory plus 1GB on-board storage memory. Users seeking for additional memory can expand the storage with microSD/SDHC memory card.

The BlackBerry Bold further supports Word, Excel or PowerPoint files and users can edit them on the handset itself through preloaded DataViz Documents to Go suite. Additionally, RIM claims that the Bold delivers a web browsing experience with desktop-style depiction. RIM Launches Facebook Application for Blackberry Devices

Blackberry maker Research In Motion (RIM) has announced to launch Facebook software for its smartphones. Through this new Facebook application, Blackberry users will be able to access Facebook, the popular social networking site.
The new software enables users to receive Facebook notifications and messages and go through them quickly in the same way as using an e-mail service. Besides, RIM also announced that users can read and write messages offline too.

The Facebook application will also integrate BlackBerry’s camera and photo management software.

Reliance launches BlackBerry Wireless Platform on CDMA Network in India

Reliance Communications (RCOM) and Research In Motion (RIM) have teamed up to announce the availability of the BlackBerry wireless platform on a CDMA network in India.

RCOM has introduced the BlackBerry 8830 World Edition smartphone, which enables interoperability between the CDMA and GSM network to improve the productivity of enterprises and professional whilst they are on-the-move.According to RCOM, India for the very first time will see an array of solutions for enterprises and professionals including Internet-based online trading. All this is thanls to the new BlackBerry.

Prakash Bajpai, President, RCOM, said “As the first player to offer BlackBerry World Edition smartphone in India, we are confident that our network will offer a superior value proposition to professionals on the move. Tellme launches Voice Search Application for BlackBerry Phones

Tellme, a subsidiary of Microsoft, has launched an innovative voice search application for RIM BlackBerry. With the new application, users can just speak their commands into the BlackBerry phone to find information on the device.

For using the new talk and find application, users will need to simply hold down the ‘talk’ button and say a keyword. Then users can see the results on the screen.

Using GPS capability in the phone, Tellme’s new application can deliver users local information such as movies, traffic information, weather, maps and driving direction etc. Also users can find out business or business categories, such as “coffee” or “hardware” results with the business address, driving directions, an option to call the business or share the listing with a friend.

“Tellme believes in the power of voice to transform how people use devices,” said Mike McCue, founder and general manager of Tellme. “Tellme delivers an end-to-end experience. As opposed to broad Web search where the user sees a list of results, Tellme focuses on specific tasks where a spoken request leads to a specific answer — like a movie show time, local weather info or driving directions.”

Google Calendar Now Syncs with BlackBerry for Free

Internet giant Google has released a free download, through which BlackBerry owners will be able to sync the Google Calendar feature with their handset.

A few months back, Google developed a mobile version of Google Calendar that gave any mobile phone user the ability to access their schedules easily through the device’s internet browser.

However, by syncing the Google Calendar to the BlackBerry, users can view their schedule even in places where the wireless reception is weak or even unavailable. Now that’s surely quite an enhancement!

Users need to visit http://m.google.com/sync on their BlackBerry device to download and install Google Sync. Once it is installed, a new Google Sync icon will appear on the phone, and from there you need to simply launch the latest application, sign into your Google account and your Blackberry calendar will then sync with Google Calendar.

Alternatively users can also install the software on their PC running the BlackBerry desktop software first, and then install it to the BlackBerry via a USB connection. Though the software is free from Google, carrier charges may apply

Apart from the Calendar Sync feature, Google has also added a one-click update for Google Mobile Products. All you need to do is visit mobile.google.com via your BlackBerry.

RIM unveils BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express

Research In Motion (RIM) has unveiled the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express, a new offering aimed at small and medium-sized businesses, branch offices and companies new to BlackBerry.

The Canadian company said that BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express offers the same enterprise-level security, consistency, features and functionality of BlackBerry Enterprise Server v4.1 and is available as a free download from RIM through the Internet to any customer who buys a new BlackBerry device.

Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at RIM said, “Mobile access is an increasingly essential requirement of doing business and this is especially prevalent in smaller businesses.” Lazaridis added, “BlackBerry Enterprise Server is renowned for helping companies become more productive and responsive, while providing industry-leading security, functionality, manageability and back-end integration. AT&T together with Research In Motion (RIM) have announced the introduction of the BlackBerry Curve, which happens to be the smallest and lightest full QWERTY BlackBerry handset till date. This new phone will be available from May 31, 2007 onwards through AT&T in North America.

Measuring 4.2” x 2.4” x 0.6” and weighing around 3.9 oz, the BlackBerry Curve handset builds on the proven and popular BlackBerry experience by offering innovative features and enhanced multimedia capabilities.

The BlackBerry Curve handset has a liquid silver finish with chrome highlights, smooth edges and soft curves.

The BlackBerry Curve phone features a 2 mega pixel camera with zoom. It also features a spell-checker for email users and a fast Internet browser as part of the phone’s email and messaging capabilities.

Settlement Reached in BlackBerry Dispute; RIM to Settle with NTP for $612.5 Million

Research In Motion on Friday announced that it has have signed a definitive licensing and settlement agreement with patent firm NTP to end a never-ending legal battle that threatened to shut down BlackBerry service in the United States. All terms of the agreement have been finalized and the litigation against RIM has been dismissed by a court order. RIM will pay NTP $612.5 million in a “full and final settlement
of all claims.”

The agreement eliminates the need for any further court proceedings or decisions relating to damages or injunctive relief.

The licensing and settlement agreement relates to all patents owned and controlled by NTP and covers all of RIM’s products, services and technologies. NTP grants RIM an unregulated right to continue its business, including its BlackBerry related business.

RIM CEO Jim Balsillie said the settlement did not leave him with “a good feeling,” but disputed the company had few options.

“It’s a lot of money for patents that will not survive for sure,” Balsillie said. “We are caught in an ambiguous time in the patent laws and the courts. No one feels good about this, but we are happy to put it behind us.”

The decision allows RIM and its partners to sell RIM products and services completely free and clear of any claim by NTP, including any claims that NTP may have against wireless carriers, channel partners, suppliers or customers in relation to RIM products or services, (including BlackBerry Connect and built-in technology), or in relation to third party products and services, to the extent they are used in connection with RIM products and services.

With respect to the accounting treatment of the settlement amount of $612.5 million, RIM said it had previously accrued $450 million and the additional amount of $162.5 million would be recorded in the fourth quarter.

In deciding not to enforce an order that would halt BlackBerry service last Friday, U.S. District Judge James Spencer reprimanded the two sides for not making more effort to settle the matter out of court. Spencer said he hoped to have a decision on the injunction “as soon as reasonably possible.”

However, the judge reminded RIM that it had already been found guilty of patent infringement. Spencer said, “The simple truth, the reality of the jury verdict has not changed.” RIM was found guilty in July 2002 of infringing on NTP’s wireless patents.

The comment from Spencer led to public statements being issued last week by both companies saying they were willing to sit down and settle matters amicable once again.

Research in Motion is all set to launch new software that will enable users to turn Windows Mobile-based smartphones in virtual BlackBerries. This software will make smartphones such as the Palm Treo, which has incidentally been made by rivals, work like a BlackBerry.

This software, which is slated to be released in the fall season, has been designed to extend BlackBerry’s dominance by offering an option to individuals who may not want to switch devices to get the service, as well as to companies that would like to give employees a wider selection of handhelds without being forced to support multiple mobile email platforms.

The software will appear as an icon on the screen of a smartphone and will have the same interface as a BlackBerry. Users will be able to toggle between the Windows Mobile and BlackBerry interfaces.

Research in Motion (RIM) is reportedly developing a new type of keyboard for its BlackBerry handsets. The new keyboard will apparently make texting a simpler task for people.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office recently discovered a patent application filed on behalf of RIM. The application described an “angular keyboard” where the keys are placed at a 45-degree angle to the base of the unit.

According to RIM, the latest keyboard will not only lessen pull on the hands and thumbs for extended typing sessions, but will also incorporate more easily struck keys rather than the conventionally right-angled keyboards on most larger smartphones.

The description of the concept from the document filed by RIM is as below:

Wireless handheld mobile communication device including a housing with a display above a keyboard exposed for user actuation. A length of the device is greater than the width. Each key of a right-hand keyfield has a longitudinal axis oriented at a left-to-right inclined angle while each key of a left-hand keyfield has a longitudinal axis oriented at a right-to-left inclined angle from the vertical centerline. A left boundary of the keyboard is located adjacent the left lateral side edge of the device and the right boundary of the keyboard is located adjacent the right lateral side edge of the device so that the keyboard spans a substantial entirety of the width of the device.

Though RIM has not yet employed the patent in a finalized product, it has created version for a number of international keyboards, such as QWERTY, AZERTY, and also Dvorak layouts.

Now it’s important to note that though the application does not mention any reference to the BlackBerry, the top image from BlackBerry Forums, resembles practically no other device than the BlackBerry.

Last year, there were quite a few cases of people who suffered from a thumb pain, termed as “BlackBerry Thumb”, essentially a stress-related injury is caused by the repetitive over-use of the thumbs with a PDA or smartphone. The new type of keyboard could perhaps be a breather for many such people. But the big question is how early, as the keyboard is yet only a mystery!

We found that process slightly faster than with rival platforms, such as Windows Mobile 5.0. Like other recent BlackBerrys, the 7130c supports up to ten accounts, so you don't have to forward e-mail from one address to another.

Attachment support is excellent, with built-in readers—but not editors—for common formats like DOC, XLS, and PDF. PowerPoint presentations can be viewed as slideshows. Like other recent BlackBerrys, the 7130c zooms in on and rotates images sent as e-mail attachments. If the image is fuzzy after zooming in, you can select Enhance to sharpen it. These two features are particularly handy for reading faxes and maps.

The 7130c supports EDGE, which is noticeably faster than GPRS but lags far behind EV-DO, which the 7130e from Sprint and Verizon Wireless use. Still, Web pages and e-mail attachments loaded quickly enough over EDGE. Globe-trotters will value the 7130c's worldwide roaming capabilities,

Battery life was an impressive 6.3 hours in our tests, two hours longer than the rated 4 hours of talk time. When used mainly for messaging, the 7130c lasts for a couple of days. Standby time is an amazing 18 days. Voice quality was good over Cingular's ever-improving network.

The 7130c is worth considering if you prefer BlackBerry's approach to e-mail, thumbwheel navigation, and want global roaming. The best part is that the new Intel processor inside this model is faster than the one inside the identically priced 7130e from Sprint and Verizon, and you don't have to pay a premium for it.

BlackBerry 7100i Review

Since the first Palm Pilot came out, I’ve been drooling over ways to take all my information with me and be able to connect to other people via the same device. No, the first Palms and other PDAs were woefully deficient in their ability to keep me in touch. But then came the BlackBerry.

Let’s skim over the original clunky RIM (Research In Motion) brand BlackBerrys that were standalone devices using a sparse communications backbone for email and text messaging. Then let’s gun the engine forward to today as I sit holding a brand new, NEXTEL-branded BlackBerry 7100i.

Four words. The future keeps coming!

I may have just found the perfect way to leave my laptop at home when I travel. Instead of carrying around up to 12lbs of technology, I can load the 7100i with my info and then use it as my lifeline to the wired and unwired world. This device is topnotch.

Right out of the box, the BlackBerry is only three steps away from being ready to go. All you have to do is load the battery, charge it up and make sure the phone is set to your email account. The phone came with a SIM card loaded and started right up when I plugged it in.

If you’ve already used a BlackBerry for work or leisure, you might want to gloss over the next few sentences as I gush about how great this thing is.

Based on the booklet and everything I’ve heard about these neat communications tools, they’re so cool and functional that you’ll be floored! Everything I might need to do and everyone I might need to contact can be loaded into the 7100i and taken with me anywhere. The additional NEXTEL walkie-talkie feature is just a bonus.

As everyone says, and as nobody believes until they see for themselves, “You have to get one of these. Your life will not be the same.”

**Grain-of-salt moment: You can definitely enjoy more functionality by carrying your current laptop, a wireless-enabled phone and a PDA, but as more functions are jammed into the ‘smartphone-style’ PDAs and BlackBerry-type devices, your attaché of electronic goods will get lighter and lighter.

Additional first impressions were the stylistic touches on this Nextel/Sprint BlackBerry. It’s only a little larger than my current LG phone and the keypad looks easy to use, while the screen is full-color and large enough for even those folks who need ‘cheater’ glasses from the local pharmacy.

Support

The BlackBerry, as mentioned, works on the NEXTEL/Sprint network and can operate as a regular cell phone, as a walkie-talkie, as an MMS device, as an email machine and as a Web access point (the browser window gets jumbled depending on the sites you visit, but you can still surf the ‘Net and enjoy unfettered access from nearly anywhere).

The 72-page manual is comprehensive and clear. It starts you right off with loading the battery and SIM card and then brings you right into syncing your files, contacts and using the phone and email functions. *As with most manuals these days, the last 20 pages are all disclaimers and legalese.

Finally, when you first set up the BlackBerry to receive and send email, your box immediately receives four emails that welcome you to the network and give you some helpful tips on typing and on managing your information – definitely a nice touch.

Functionality

I am not a dolt. I’m an early-adopter of many technologies and gadgets, but the one thing I failed to jump on board with years ago was the BlackBerry. On some counts I am kicking myself, but on others I’m glad I waited. The devices are not so streamlined, functional and fun to use that I would have probably complained for two years if I had to keep a clunky, oversized BlackBerry in my pocket or briefcase just to stay in touch with the world.

Let’s look at this device from three aspects: phone functions, record keeping and Internet/Web.

As a phone, the NEXTEL/Sprint BlackBerry 7100i gets better reception in some spots than my Verizon phone. It features the walkie-talkie functionality of NEXTEL and the 7100i must have a stronger antenna than earlier cells because reception was good everywhere I used it. In fact, I just drove my father’s car to Florida from Boston and the 7100i got a strong signal the whole trip.

Some of the limitations you might face with a NEXTEL/Sprint contract seem to have been alleviated. In 2000, I had one of the first Sprint flip cell phones and if I was more than 42-feet from a major highway, the reception was ZERO. The combined networks have fixed this issue through a larger collection of towers and better technology.

Additionally, the handset fits nicely in its included holster, fits neatly in my small hands and is easy to listen to and speak into. It even has an extendable antenna for increased reception. I kept the phone volume on medium the whole time even though I constantly change the volume on my own phone depending on background noise and reception.

Coordinating your contact list, your information and your life. The BlackBerry does it simply and efficiently. Through the USB to USB sync cable, this puppy can grab your calendar, your phone list and other info right from your PC. Unfortunately, BlackBerry isn’t Mac compatible out of the box (Pocket Mac for BlackBerry required), but I’m still tempted to abscond with this device for all its other features.

It has a calculator, task list and even a game called BrickBreaker as nice other touches. In fact, if you were going away for a while and needed to remain connected to an office or to your appointments, you could do it with just this device. After a while the typing might get bothersome and the little screen could bug you, but you would certainly survive.

Internet and the Web are the two things this device handles that amazed me the most. I’m guilty of Googling myself and visiting my own Web sites frequently (helps boost traffic), so the first thing I did when I got the 7100i running was jump online and go to my sites. Just plain neat.

It was seamless. All I had to do was turn it on, select the icon that looks like the earth and type in my URLs. Maybe the most difficult thing was getting used to the two modes of typing offered on the BlackBerry – SureType or Multi-tap.

With SureType, you just type away and the device tries to guess the words you’re spelling. It’s entirely useless for Web addresses. When I tried to put in jeffcutler.com/jblog, I stymied the unit. No matter how I tried, it wasn’t going to guess my URLs. But, when using the Multi-tap method (and you can switch between the two with one button press) it was simple. Even symbol use is almost intuitive.

As for email access, it’s great. My parents’ house is on an island just off the coast of Florida. They only recently got high-speed Internet access and I’ve been unable to get my iBook to play nice with their connections down here so I frequently WiJack around the island to check my email. With the BlackBerry, I can sit by the pool and find out who’s trying to get in touch with me.

Just jump into the email (set-up takes only a few minutes) and you’re cooking with gas. Emails come right to your handset. I’m already trying to justify giving up my ordinary cell that only has text messages and picture messages. How can they compare to full-on Internet?

Overall Impressions

If you’re sick of me piling praise on the 7100i, here’s your comeuppance. The only drawback to having the Internet in your pocket is price. As with any cellphone or Internet plan, access costs money. But if you’re going to spend money on a cell and use it for wireless Web and/or extensive text messaging, go the whole way and get a BlackBerry.

I found the 7100i easy to use, fun to set up and a great way to stay in touch with civilization while away from my office. It sells right now for $199 through Sprint Nextel.

RIM BlackBerry 7210

Research in Motion's (RIM) early attempts at mating its popular wireless e-mail device/PDA with a cell phone didn't turn out as well as the company had hoped. But the BlackBerry 7210, RIM's first color-screen model, is a different story. Offered by AT&T Wireless for $449, the 7210, which is largely the same as T-Mobile's 7230, combines a GSM/GPRS phone, a PDA, and wireless e-mail capabilities in a slim, 4.8-ounce unit that doesn't require an earbud to talk on. The only potential drawback is AT&T Wireless's service; if the carrier's GPRS coverage is not widespread in your area, you'll have a tough time getting e-mail on the go.

	Pocket-friendly: While most will wear the BlackBerry on a belt, it'll also fit in a shirt pocket.

Some jokingly refer to the 7210 as a BlueBerry rather than a BlackBerry because of its azure casing. A bit shorter and thicker (4.4 by 2.9 by 0.94 inches) than RIM's stalwart 957, the unit is compact for a smart phone; male buyers will probably wear it clipped to their belts using the included swiveling holster.

The high-resolution, 240x160-pixel color display supports 65,000 hues and is the same width but a shorter length than the 957's screen. Though not as bright--even with the backlight on--as the displays found on Pocket PCs or Palms, the screen is readable and is made for viewing in direct sunlight. As for the keys, they're slightly bigger and raised higher than the 957's, so they're more tactile. Either way, the 7210's minikeyboard is among the best available to date and certainly superior to the ones found on Handspring's Treo models.

A little girth: The 7210 is slightly thicker than the old BlackBerry favorite, the 957.

No cradle needed: We appreciate the included USB cable/charger.

The first thing you'll notice when you go to dial a number manually is that RIM has created a traditional number dial pad over the keys on the left side of the keyboard. When inputting numbers as part of a text message, you may be initially thrown off by the layout. However, the arrangement is essential if you want to dial numbers on the 7210 as you would with a traditional phone.

As with RIM's earlier combo units, you can plug in the bundled headset to make a call, but this model also features a built-in earpiece and mike. It's not the most comfortable implementation, but it's quite usable as a phone, a wireless e-mail device, and a PDA.

Along with the familiar scrollwheel and the Back button (which you press to end a call) on the right-hand side of the unit, you'll find a port for a USB cable/charger on the left. On top, there's a quick-launch button for phone mode, plus an IR port. The removable lithium-ion battery can be replaced.

While it has no SD (Secure Digital) card expansion slot, this model ships with a healthy 16MB of internal flash memory and 2MB of SRAM. The unit also includes a 10MB in-box, and it supports Lotus Notes. Yet the dual-band 7210, unlike T-Mobile's 7230, is not a true world phone (GSM 900/1900; GPRS).

World traveler: The 7210 comes with all the plugs a globetrotter would need.

One-handed dialing: We like the overlay of numeric keys on the QWERTY keyboard.

If your company hasn't installed BlackBerry Enterprise Server, you can opt for BlackBerry Web Client, which comes in AT&T's package and allows you to have e-mail messages wirelessly forwarded to your 7210 from an e-mail account. Setup is fairly simple and can be done in a matter of minutes on the Web or via a wireless Web connection on the device. Data plans are $39.99 per month for 8MB of data or $49.99 for unlimited e-mail.

While the enterprise version offers real-time e-mail delivery and wireless calendar syncing (an appointment can be wirelessly updated from the office), the e-mail pushed to the 7210 by Web Client has about a 15-minute delay. And Web Client now offers some wireless syncing; if you delete e-mail on the 7210, it will also be deleted on your desktop. The BlackBerry's address and calendar applications aren't quite as snazzy as a Pocket PC's or a Palm's, but most users will be pleased with the device's PDA side. Other core electronic organizer applications include a task manager, a memo pad, a calculator, and an alarm. The BrickBreaker game comes preinstalled, and you can add third-party applications just like you would with a Palm or a Pocket PC.

With J2ME onboard, RIM is touting the BlackBerry's expansion into the Java realm, which is a plus. You can now open a wide variety of e-mail attachments--most importantly, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files, as well as Adobe PDFs--and view them on the device. Unfortunately, you can't edit a Word or Excel file, save it, and send it back to a colleague. This is a read-only situation.

Like other BlackBerrys, the 7210 is lacking in the multimedia department, but that's not a sin, especially as this is a business-oriented device. However, in an ideal world, we would like to have seen a speakerphone and Bluetooth support for wireless headsets.

All the phone basics are here, including a robust call history, the ability to dial contact numbers directly from the address book, two-way SMS messaging, and a vibrating ringer option. Phone and PDA elements are well integrated. A Web browser is onboard, though only Enterprise customers can currently surf full-blown HTML sites. RIM says a downloadable software update that adds HTML browsing will be available for Web Client users later this year.

You'd expect a color screen to have a serious impact on battery life, but the 7210's display is designed to use the backlight sparingly; you'll need to activate it in only dimly lit environments or at night. As a result, you can expect decent battery life that's on a par with that of the most energy-efficient smart phones currently available. RIM says you can get up to four hours of talk time and 10 days of standby time. In our tests, we hit the talk-time number and managed to go a full week on standby. With normal use, however, you should expect to recharge every third day, or every second day to be on the safe side.

Using AT&T's GSM/GPRS service in San Francisco, we had a generally good experience. Occasionally, we lost the sweet spot of the speaker on our ear and had to adjust the phone accordingly. Also, when the backlight was on, call quality diminished significantly. But the BlackBerry was fairly loud, and we appreciated that we could raise and lower the volume using the scrollwheel in the middle of a call. On their end, callers said we sounded clear with no static. In noisier environments, it helps to use a headset, but it's not essential.

RIM BlackBerry 7510

Coming on the heels of its color BlackBerry 7210 and 7230 for, respectively, AT&T Wireless and T-Mobile services, Research in Motion (RIM) raises the bar further with the BlackBerry 7510. Largely resembling its predecessor in size and shape (with the exception of an included antenna), the new model adds a speakerphone, the first for a BlackBerry device, and a connection to Nextel's Nationwide Direct Connect Push To Talk service. Its initial price of $549 is a bit on the high side, but Nextel is offering a $200 discount for new customers signing a one-year contract.

Upside: The 7510 promises to pack a lot into one package. A phone, a Web browser (through Nextel Online's wireless Web), e-mail access, and an organizer are all included, and the addition of the speakerphone is a welcome plus over Nextel's previous 6510 model. Its other features are largely the same as those of the 7210 and the 7230: a 65,000-color, 240x160-pixel display; a QWERTY keyboard; and a thumb-operated trackwheel, as well as support for Java and real-time e-mail with attachments.

Downside: Though the 7510 has 16MB of flash memory and 2MB of SRAM, it lacks a memory expansion slot. Also, this model works on Nextel's 800MHz iDEN network in the United States only and not abroad.

Outlook: The 7510 looks like a good match for Nextel's business-oriented users who want--and can afford--to make the switch to a sophisticated smart phone. However, its ultimate success will depend on a sub-$350 price point.

RIM BlackBerry 7510

Nextel customers and BlackBerry users are two staunchly dedicated groups of people, which is why it came as no shock to us that the , offered by Nextel, met with a good amount of enthusiasm. Finally, Nextel users who loved the company's business-oriented Direct Connect walkie-talkie service could join the BlackBerry craze. Of course, like early prototypes, the 7510 had some limitations--namely, a paltry 16MB of memory and no Bluetooth. Fortunately, the RIM BlackBerry 7520 answers these criticisms with 32MB of memory and Bluetooth capabilities for wireless headsets, earpieces, and car kits.

Upside: Hard-core road warriors will appreciate the addition of Bluetooth, which will free them from either having to use the handset like a standard cell phone (which BlackBerry phones don't do well in the first place) or a wired earpiece. An all-in-one device, the 7520 offers users Web-browsing capabilities; remote e-mail access; and wireless PIM-data synchronization of calendar, contacts, and tasks. And like its predecessor, the 7520 has a speakerphone, access to Nextel's Direct Connect service, a full QWERTY keyboard, a large, 65,000-color display, a thumb-operated trackwheel, and support for Java and real-time e-mail with attachments.

Downside: The 7520 lacks a memory-expansion slot and operates on Nextel's 800MHz network, which won't work in many countries beyond North America. Also, it lacks an infrared port.

Outlook: The 7520 should please business-oriented users, who already make up a huge part of Nextel's customer roster. At around $200 with a service agreement, it's a fairly priced smart phone that, thanks to the addition of Bluetooth

Like other 7200 models, the 7280 has a backlit 240x160 display with over 65,000 colors and a handy 33 key PC-like QWERTY keyboard. Easy navigation between menus is available with the known Blackberry trackwheel. It is also voice activated, allowing you to quickly operate many of the applications without ever using the keyboard or trackwheel.

The Blackberry 7250 is similar to the 7290 model, with a large 4 MB SRAM memory and 32 MB of flash memory. This makes this a good device for storing relatively large amounts of data. Like the other models in the 7200 series, it has a great 65,000 colors 240x160 display and a convenient 33 key PC-like QWERTY keyboard for easy typing. Browsing and navigating the Blackberry 7250 is made easier with built-in trackwheel, or you can simply "talk" to your Blackberry - the 7250 is voice enabled with and has wireless Bluetooth support.

The Blackberry 7250 is very similar to the 7290 model, with a large 4 MB SRAM memory.

This model does have the shortest battery life of all 7200 Blackberry models, with only 3.3 hours of talk time (up to 8 days or 192 hours when in standby mode), but unless you're relying on it for long business trip, this is not necessarily a main issue, as the other 7200 models only have up to 5 battery life hours of talk time and up to 10 days of standby mode.

The main difference between the Blackberry 7250 and other 7200 models, lies with its supported wireless network. This is the only 7200 model compatible with 800/1900 MHz CDMA2000 1X networks. It is offered by ALLTEL, Earthlink Wireless and Verizon Wireless in the USA, and by Bell in Canada. This is not the right Blackberry for you if you travel overseas frequently and need a migrating cell phone, as the Blackberry 7250 is not supported by any networks outside North America.

Blackberry 7230

One of the Blackberry 7200 series PDA's, the Blackberry 7230 device boasts the same elegant design. Like its 7200 counterparts, it comes with corporate data access, wireless email access, connected organizer and more, making it a great tool for any business person. It's also voice operated, so you don't have to use your fingers too often. But when you, do there's a comfortable full QWERTY keyboard available.

The Blackberry 7230 model features the same clear display with 65,000 colors spread over a high resolution 240x160 screen. The screen is backlit for easy use during all times of day and night.

The Blackberry 7230 is is compatible only with 1900MHz GSM/GPRS networks in North America (and not with 850 MHz GSM/GPRS networks). This makes little difference to the average user, other than limiting the choice of operators to Cingular and T-Mobile. However, the Blackberry 7230 is compatible with the European and Asia Pacific networks at both 900Mhz and 1800Mhz, making it very good for the traveling business person.

The long battery life is also a great feature for the business person. The Blackberry 7230 battery can last for up to 10 days in standby mode, or 5 hours of talk time - that's the top of the scale at the Blackberry 7200 series.

The Blackberry 7230 is usually cheaper than the other PDA's in the 7200 line. That's largely due to its limited internal memory. With only 16 MB in its Flash memory and 2MB of SRAM, it belongs to the low-scale of the 7200 as far as memory is concerned.

Blackberry 6750

The last model still in production in the Blackberry 6700 series, the Blackberry 6750 is actually a solid useful PDA and cell phone in one. It features many of the trademark Blackberry abilities.

As with many other Blackberry PDA's the Blackberry 6750 supports Wireless Email, corporate data access, synchronized organizer and calendar, SMS and wireless internet browsing. At 5.06oz (143gr) it is only slightly heavier than newer models.

The 6750 also has the backlit easy-to-use full QWERTY keyboard and the thumb-operated trackwheel for fast navigation. The relative smaller memory size, at 2MB SRAM and a 10 MB flash memory, shouldn't be in the way of most users either.

The most visible drawback with the Blackberry 6750 is the monochromatic display. Once you get used to the colorful display of the newer models it can be hard to work in monochrome again. IT also needs its own docking cradle to synchronize with other systems, having neither blue tooth abilities, nor a USB interface.

If you need a Blackberry work horse for a low price, and don't require synchronizations with other networks, a second hand Blackberry 6750 may be a good solution for you.

BlackBerry 8820 Dual-mode Smartphone unveiled by RIM

Yesterday, Research in Motion (RIM), announced the new BlackBerry 8820 smartphone. The company claims that it is the first dual-mode BlackBerry to provide wireless voice and data access over both cellular and Wi-Fi networks.

The all-new BlackBerry 8820 smartphone features a large and bright 320×240 display. It sports a full and highly tactile QWERTY keyboard and a very user-friendly trackball navigation system.

The BlackBerry 8820 also includes built-in GPS functionality, new enhancements in RIM’s media player as well as a microSD expandable memory slot that supports up to 32GB cards.

This latest offering from RIM, the BlackBerry 8820 combines EDGE/GPRS/GSM cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity for data access and voice support via UMA (unlicensed mobile access) for fixed mobile convergence.

According to Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at RIM, “The BlackBerry 8820 complements our carrier partners’ cellular networks with the added ability to stay connected via Wi-Fi at home, through hotspots and corporate campuses.”

The BlackBerry 8820 smartphone also comes with voice-activated dialing, conference calling, speed dialing and dedicated keys for muting calls as well as for performing other functions.

Not only that, the ultra-thin, high-capacity battery is removable and this further extends the exceptional battery life for which BlackBerry handsets are known.

The latest BlackBerry from RIM also features a speakerphone and Bluetooth 2.0 support.
